Effective offpage optimization is critical if you expect to rank well in the search engines. First and foremost you must have links that point to your site. These links must include your primary keywords in the anchor text.
One very effective method is to get links from the exact same websites the rank high for the search term/terms you are targeting. Simply see who they link to and go after the same links. One very important point is to get as many links from different IP addresses as possible.
Most search engine optimization companies are not aware that it is best to have the same percentage of links containing the specific keyword you are trying to target. This valuable concept alone will give you a considerable edge over your competiton.
Buying links is also an option, but there are differences of opinion on this topic since some experts will argue that several of the main search engine do not look very kindly towards this tactic.
Remember onpage optimization is still important but does not carry as much weight as offpage optimization.
